Three Times A Day, Twice As Hot

King Darius chose 120 captains to rule over the people, and three leaders to rule over the 120 captains.  Daniel was one of the three leaders. According to some, it was thought that Daniel had a special spirit in him, but Daniel was yoked up with God--remember that Daniel not only interpreted King Darius' dream but also told the king what the dream was.

The king saw that Daniel was doing a really great job and gave him power over the whole nation. The other leaders and captains became incensed that Daniel was given so much power and sought how they could set a trap for Daniel--to have him break the king’s law and have Daniel thrown into the lion’s den. The problem was that Daniel was an honest man and would not do anything wrong.

The captains said what we have to do is to get the king to make a law that says that you cannot pray to god or man for thirty days, unless you are praying to the king, or you will be thrown into the lions’ den. Daniel prayed to God every day and three times a day. They took the law they had written to King Darius.  The king thought that it was a great idea to have such a law and signed it, making it law. The law applied to everyone. The captains then sat watch against Daniel, on a rotation, so that he would never be out of sight.

When Daniel became aware of the law he immediately went to his room, where the windows were opened wide and prayed to the Lord, each day and three times a day. The captains that were watching and waiting to see if Daniel would stop praying to his God, went and told the King that Daniel was still praying to his God.  King Darius believed that Daniel's God was real, but somehow, deep down did not fully like the idea that people should stop making obeyance to the king.  Nevertheless, when he heard that Daniel was breaking the law, he could not stop him from being thrown into the lions' den.  The king said, let's see if your God can save you now. (Daniel 6)  King Darius knew that God would save Daniel he just did not know how God would do it. The king had already witnessed four people in the fiery furnace--fully clothed and heads full of hair--with the fire turned up twice as hot. (Daniel 3)
